The New Zealand wine guide

A traveller's field guide to New Zealand's wine country

A maritime climate stretching across two islands — from subtropical Gisborne in the north to frost-edged Southland — gives New Zealand an unusually wide range of cool-climate styles. Sauvignon Blanc dominates, with roughly two-thirds of the country's 39,935 hectares planted to the grape, mostly in Marlborough's Wairau and Awatere valleys. Alongside it, Pinot Noir thrives in the schist soils of Central Otago, the limestone-laced Waitaki Valley, and the windswept terraces of Martinborough.

Vineyard stays here tend to be intimate rather than grand — boutique lodges on working estates in Hawke's Bay, converted farmhouses above the Waipara Valley's chalk ridges, or small guesthouses within cycling distance of Blenheim's cellar doors. Because nearly 90% of production is exported, visiting the source carries a particular reward: wines poured in the winery where they were made, in landscapes that shift dramatically from region to region.

Where the wine is grown

Select a region to explore its terroir, altitude and signature grapes — the building blocks of New Zealand's wines.

Hawke's Bay

Region guide

Free-draining stony soils in the Gimblett Gravels retain heat long enough to ripen Syrah to a depth rarely achieved this far south, giving Hawke's Bay its clearest identity. Mission Estate, founded by French Marist missionaries in 1851, roots the whole region in a history that younger appellations like Bridge Pa Triangle are still writing.

Traditions & terroir

What makes New Zealand unmistakable

Single Varietal Focus

New Zealand's winemakers emphasize single varietal wines, allowing grapes like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir to express their unique terroir and regional characteristics.

Diverse Terroir

The country's elongated geography and maritime climate create distinct growing conditions across regions, from the cool-climate Pinot Noir of Central Otago to the rich Sauvignon Blanc of Marlborough.

Export Excellence

Nearly 90% of New Zealand's wine production is exported, with a strong emphasis on quality, leading to a significant global presence, particularly in the US, UK, and Australia.
