Qvevri are large clay vessels buried underground in which Georgians have fermented and aged wine for over 8,000 years. The technique is UNESCO-listed and produces distinctive amber (orange) wines from white grapes, fermented on the skins.
Which Georgian region is best for wine tourism?
Kakheti in eastern Georgia is the largest and most established wine region, home to Tsinandali Estate, Schuchmann Wines, and Lopota Resort. Imereti in the west is smaller and more rustic. Most travellers base in Kakheti for two to four nights and add a day in Tbilisi.
