Rioja's identity comes from Tempranillo aged in American oak, producing wines labelled Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva based on time in barrel and bottle. The region splits into Rioja Alta (cooler, more elegant), Rioja Alavesa (steepest slopes, freshest fruit), and Rioja Oriental (warmer, fuller).
