About Napa Valley winery hotels

Napa Valley is thirty miles long and rarely more than five wide, and it holds the highest concentration of luxury wine hotels in the United States. Cabernet Sauvignon from the valley floor and the hillside AVAs above it is the reference point for American fine wine, and the hospitality around it — Michelin kitchens, geothermal spas, dawn balloon flights — has been built to match.

The valley's reputation was made at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, when Napa Cabernet and Chardonnay beat classed-growth Bordeaux and white Burgundy in a blind tasting, and it has never really let go of it. Sixteen nested AVAs run from cool, fog-touched Carneros in the south through Yountville, Oakville and Rutherford in the middle to warm Calistoga at the northern end, with mountain appellations — Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, Stags Leap District — supplying the more structured, tannic wines. Yountville alone carries one of the densest concentrations of Michelin stars per capita in the country. Stays split between valley-floor resorts with vineyard frontage and hillside estates with a view down the length of the valley; almost all of them run a spa, and Calistoga's volcanic mud baths and hot springs predate the wine tourism by a century. Harvest ('crush') runs late August through October and is the most expensive and most atmospheric time to come — book six to nine months out.
