Winery hotels & vineyard stays in Temecula Valley

Temecula Valley is the wine country Los Angeles and San Diego can reach before lunch — an hour from either, and built almost entirely around staying the night. Marine air pulled through the Rainbow Gap cools vineyards sitting at 400 to 600 metres, which is why Syrah, Viognier and Grenache do far better here than the latitude suggests. The winery hotels along Rancho California Road are the densest cluster of on-site vineyard lodging anywhere in the state.

The modern industry started in 1968, when Ely Callaway planted the first commercial vineyard on land everyone else had written off as too hot for wine. The Temecula Valley AVA was granted in 1984 and now runs to roughly 33,000 acres with about 50 bonded wineries, most of them concentrated in the De Portola Wine Trail and along Rancho California Road. What sets it apart from Napa or Paso Robles is proximity and pace: properties sit minutes apart, several run their own hotels rather than a tasting room alone, and almost all of them can be reached without a designated driver if you simply book a room. Mornings belong to the hot-air balloons — Temecula is one of the busiest balloon-launch sites in the western United States, and dawn flights over the vines are effectively a regional ritual. Days settle into tasting-room hopping, olive oil and citrus stops, and dinners at winery restaurants; Old Town Temecula, ten minutes west, supplies the non-wine evening. Harvest runs August into early October, and the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival each spring is the year's busiest weekend.
