Mendelbaum Cellars Guest Cabins
Fredericksburg creekside cabins at an Israeli-Texan wine house
Why guests love Mendelbaum Cellars Guest Cabins
Galilee and the Texas High Plains meet in the same cellar here, which makes Mendelbaum the only house of its kind in the Hill Country. Wine is produced on site, but the fruit is not estate-grown: grapes come from Israel and from the High Plains four hundred miles northwest, and the tasting bar pours both traditions next to each other. Whether that reads as a curiosity or a genuine point of interest depends on the visitor, but nowhere else in the appellation offers the comparison. Tasting happens a five-minute walk from the beds, at a winery about ten miles east of downtown Fredericksburg on the US-290 wine road. The cellar sits on Grape Creek, with creek frontage and the Grape Creek Trail on the property, the historic Lower South Grape School nearby, and seasonal peach picking in summer โ the Hill Country's other agricultural claim to fame. Lodging is eight keys on the adjacent parcel: six detached cabins named for orchard fruit and trees โ Almond, Fig, Olive, Peach, Pecan and Plum โ plus two lofts above the winery building itself. Cabins carry a separate bedroom with a queen, a sofa bed and a twin mattress, a bathroom with tub and shower, a fully equipped kitchen and a covered porch; Olive and Almond run to two storeys. The lofts sleep two. Because all eight can be taken together for around thirty guests, this is the strongest group and corporate-retreat address in Fredericksburg. Guests share an eight-person indoor hot tub and a barbecue area. There is no restaurant, no pool, no spa and no breakfast, so the cabin kitchens do real work and the US-290 restaurants fill the rest. One thing worth knowing before booking, because the winery's rating does not capture it: the cabins review considerably worse than the cellar door. They sit at three out of five on Tripadvisor and near the bottom of Fredericksburg's specialty lodging, with repeated complaints about housekeeping and maintenance. The wine and the group capacity are the reasons to come; arrive with expectations set for a rustic cabin rather than a hotel room.
