The Manor Haus at Messina Hof Hill Country

Four cottages behind an estate barrel house on the Fredericksburg wine road

Why guests love The Manor Haus at Messina Hof Hill Country

Messina Hof has been a Texas wine institution since the Bonarrigo family founded it at Bryan in 1977, and the Hill Country outpost carries that weight without the crowds of the US-290 strip further west. The property has its own estate vineyard and an Estate Barrel House, where the Harvest Festival and grape stomping run each season. The vines immediately around the cottages are planted to Lenoir, the heat-tolerant variety that goes into the house port; the bulk of the fruit comes from the Bryan estate and the Texas High Plains. Guests taste on site and can tour the vineyard, but the barrel house is what distinguishes a stay here โ€” it puts the working side of the winery a short walk from the bed rather than behind a booking form. Every stay arrives with a bottle of Messina Hof sparkling wine, and a breakfast basket of breads, fruit and juice comes with the room. The four Manor Haus cottages sit behind the winery in oak woodland: Paris Haus with two queens, President's Haus and Hof Haus with kings, and Messina Haus. Each is a standalone building with a private living area and big-screen TV, a wet bar with microwave, refrigerator and bar sink, a secluded bedroom opening onto a patio that faces the trees, and a private bath. Set expectations on two points before booking โ€” the property is eighteen and over, takes no pets and is entirely smoke-free. There is no pool and no spa. Dining runs on site alongside the tasting room, and weddings and events fill a good part of the calendar, so the grounds are busiest at weekends and quietest midweek. Guests who want the winery to themselves should book Monday to Thursday, when the barrel house and the tasting room both slow down. The location trades walkable-downtown convenience for quiet: Blumenthal sits about ten miles east of Fredericksburg and five miles from Stonewall, which puts the LBJ Ranch, the Stonewall peach orchards and a long run of US-290 cellar doors within a few minutes' drive. Texas harvest is unusually early, running July into August, and spring brings wildflowers along the highway.
